powers, injuries, and death

Abandon all hope, you who enter here.

Powers

All characters are dead -- specifically, they are shades. They have solid bodies that are indistinguishable from their normal forms. However, they are essentially an echo of their living selves. Their bodies are cold. Their pulse is slow, and their blood thick and dark. Under normal circumstances they would no longer need to eat or drink, and they would only feel occasional slight pangs of hunger or thirst if they felt it in life -- more a psychological desire than a physiological one. Currently, however, every shade has been partially corrupted due to recent meddling with the soul bond, and experiences an intense hunger and an incredible desire to sate it in any way necessary. This is planned to be temporary and will last until further notice. Everyone can still taste, see, hear, smell, feel, etc. just as they could in life.

For this reason their magical/supernatural abilities are reduced. As a rule of thumb characters' magical and unnatural abilities are going to be reduced to about 1/3 of their normal potency. Powers that allow summoning items or weapons summon shoddier versions of those items; powers that are completely game-breaking (one-hit kills, reality-altering, etc) are changed to lesser versions or removed. Skill-based abilities, on the other hand, are left intact unless said skills are lost over the course of the game. Characters who start as amnesiacs have their skills intact by default.

Injury and Death

Characters lose blood very slowly and heal quickly, although the healing tends to leave some very unfortunate scars. Your characters cannot die, since they are already dead. Generally speaking characters will just survive a fatal blow in an extremely unpleasant way. If you get cut in half, you’re still alive -- just alive and cut in half. If you drown, you’re alive but your lungs are full of fluid, which isn’t fun. If a character “dies”, they will need to be fixed, either by an NPC or by other players. The method of their fixing will likely be sort of gross. A character who drowns will be cut open and have their lungs replaced, a character cut in half will be sewn together and will have the thread holding them together forever, etc. Playing out the specific act of fixing someone can be handwaved for time-saving purposes.
