There is no greater sorrow Than to be mindful of the happy time In misery.
Memories
Memory is broadly defined here. It can be a memory of a particular event in your character’s life. It can also be a memory of a person, a concept, a motivation, an emotion, or a skill. If having your character lose something sounds like it would be fun for you, go for it. This is for your enjoyment and I totally don’t care how you engage with it as long as you’re engaging with it.
Memories can be taken from your character’s time in-game. They can also be taken from their canon. They can be either significant or trivial. Occasionally you will be required to use a significant memory rather than a trivial one, so you should probably have a few in mind for such occasions. You are not required to have a memory registry or to do writeups, but it's strongly recommended that you do so. Loss and Gain Regaining or losing memories happens based on the results of games and challenges. Upon winning or losing a game, marks will appear on affected characters. Your character does not need to have participated in the game for this effect to take place -- even if they missed it entirely, there will be a mark. The mark is basically a tattoo and it will appear somewhere on your character's body. You are free to choose where it appears and what shape it takes -- it can be writing, a design, a pattern, a picture or whatever else. It will be in your character's team colors. Significant memories appear as larger tattoos and trivial memories appear as smaller ones.
If you started with memories -- whenever your team loses a game, you gain a mark. This mark indicates that you are slated to lose a memory at some point in the future. ICly, your character does not know when this will happen -- it could be within seconds of appearing, it could be hours or days or weeks. OOCly, this is to allow you to have memories lost when you are ready, and not before.
When the memory is lost, the tattoo will change into a brand/scar in whatever shape it initially appeared in. There is no physical sensation associated with this, so your character will only know that they've lost a memory if they check the mark, or if the change in their behavior is enough for them to notice.
If your team wins a game before you lose the memory, the mark will disappear normally, leaving only a faint bruise behind, and no scarring. The memory will not be lost in this case.
If you started without memories -- basically the same as the above, but everything reversed. The mark appears on your body after your team wins a game, and turns into a brand/scar when the memory is regained. If your team loses a game before the memory is regained, the tattoo will disappear leaving only a bruise and the memory will not be regained.
The key difference for regaining memories is that when a memory is regained, the character will live through it, vividly, at the exact moment of regaining it. This will cause them to be in a sort of 'trance state' for as long as the memory lasts.
If the memory is not of an event but a concept, skill, or something similar, the trance will only last a few moments.
Characters who started without memories cannot lose the memories they regain, and characters who started with them cannot regain the memories they've lost, except in special circumstances. These circumstances will be pretty rare but will pop up at some point. They will not be the norm for games. |
